“Who ever walked behind anyone to freedom? If we can't go hand in hand, I don't want to go.”

— Hazel Scott (Black American Jazz & Classical Artist)

about us

RIOT SOUP (est. Jan 2019) is a collective made up of Black and Brown women artists in London and was founded as a grassroots, bottom up solution to addressing racism and inequality in the arts.

Through exhibitions, workshops and other events, our creative sisterhood strives to open up discussion to the issues that surround us most as people “of colour”, women and artists. We hope that by drawing our respective narratives from the peripheral to the centre, that we pull ourselves and those like us out of the invisible/hyper-visible state we find ourselves in. And by advocating for racialised and marginalised people and providing opportunities where we can, we aim to improve the experience and wellbeing of those accessing art, culture and creative industry.

Our efforts also extend to motivating actionable racial allyship and solidarity and encouraging the growth and bond of community. Ultimately, we intend to affect real change and have a positive impact on those who like us, belong to typically underserved communities, hoping to set a standard across the sector while we do so and inspire the individual and collective empowerment of other Global Majority creatives in taking charge of their representation and experience within the arts and beyond.

what our members have to say

“Being part of RIOT SOUP is a huge privilege: these incredible, ferociously intelligent and prodigiously talented women are also the kindest, funniest and most loving people I've met.”

“I hope we can continue to evolve away from a space of necessity and more towards … what is needed to benefit our authentic visibility.”
